Lt. Joseph Petrosino, NYPD, made it his mission to take down the notorious extortion and crime ring known as “The Black Hand,” which infiltrated New York City’s immigrant communities and others across the nation, having roots within the Sicilian Mafia. After arresting some of the major organized crime figures of the 1890s and 1900s, Lt. Petrosino went undercover to Sicily to weed out major crime leaders there, only to be assassinated after then-NYPD Commissioner Theodore Bingham told the city press about the mission.
